World Peace

A letter to the President

By Tracey Sheldon

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing a plea for world peace.  Peace is imperative for public tranquility, but I and other young people worry about what the future will bring us. Will we even have a future?  Today, the world is threatened by nuclear war, by famine, by terrorism, and by military aggression.  Will there be a tomorrow? And will the children of America’s future live this same anxious reality – that tomorrow may not come?  Mr. President, I feel that it is your duty to make tomorrow a living reality in the eyes of the young, the children, for what kind of future can there be without hope?

Peace is a goal that we Americans must work to achieve. Peace is communication.  Peace is love and friendship. If we, the peoples of the world, could learn to regard the nations as individuals with emotions and feelings like our own and to look beyond cultural values, forms of government, and religious beliefs, we could anticipate the reality of peace.  If we could work together to prevent the tragedy of war and human misery, we could begin to experience the peace of a certain future.  In this, Mr. President, you have the opportunity to lead us to replace hostility with the hope of peaceful coexistence.

You have said that you are a man of peace, Mr. President.  Please answer my plea for peace, for it not mine alone but that of many others.  Think of the children, and make their tomorrow a living reality.  Capture the perfect dream – capture the reality of peace.

Sincerely yours,

Tracey Sheldon
